1960 Contemporary Framework

The Swinging 60s.

  • In the 1940s WW2 happened which impacted and influenced 1960s.
  • Poverty
  • 1950s the USA invented the term teenager, before that from 4-21 you were a child.
  • the 60s in the UK has 3 main youth groups:
  • Mods: Bowl cuts, focused on music and fashion, illegal drug use.
  • Rockers: Motorcycles, rock n' roll, switchblades, illegal drug use.
  • Hippies: Drug users, sex outside of marriage, people who want peace, protestors, hate war, free love, illegal drug use.
  • 1950s the pill was made where women who were married could take this however in the 60s doctors saw the world was changing and gave the pill to anyone who was over 21. This made the decade of free love.
  • Vietnam War
  • In 1968 men who had sex with another man would not go into jail.
  • Multi cultural Britain was in full swing however interracial couples were frowned upon.
  • Drugs were legal, later made illegal.
  • Coca Cola designed to make you happy with cocaine in it however it was found that cocaine made you depressed.
  •  - Hippies, Rockers & Mods.
