Music Video Question

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Music videos such as Avril Lavignes 'Sk8ter Boi' and Wheatus's 'Teenage Dirtbag' use media language to differ from each other with the use of mise-en-scene and camera work.

Sk8ter Boi is a pop punk song, this is clearly shown within the music video. In 'Sk8ter Boi' the mise-en-scene is used throughout the video, Avril Lavigne wears a typical skater outfit consisting off jeans, bracelet and a hat, this would appeal to the audiences who are into skating. The setting is inside an abandoned building which would be illegal to be in this attracts the audience who are rebellious young people. The camera work in 'Sk8ter Boi' is mainly hand held, this was very popular within skaters because cameras started to go cheaper and therefore more people owned them who would then film and upload videos of their skating. In the middle there are a series of low angle shots showing the main guy skating, the attracted audiences would enjoy this. At the end there is a bird-eye long shot which shows an illegal gig in the streets. The targeted audiences would enjoy this and maybe relate because they're mainly rebellious teenagers.

Teenage Dirtbag is a pop mainstream song, this is clearly shown within the video. In 'Teenage Dirtbag' they use the main actor from 'American Pie' Jason Biggs, at the time American Pie was a massive film popular with a mainstream audience. He ends up going into a dream set in a very typical high school with the many cliques. The main girl who turns out to be the boys crush is shown very early when she walks out of the car and does a slow motion hair flip, this appeals to a mainstream audience who would understand this and would probably relate to having a high school crush and not being able to get with them. The band wear bright coloured tops and sports tops, the mainstream audience would love this because most would love sport and probably wear clothes similar to this.

Example -

Music videos use media language such as the use of colour to create different effects to fit the meaning of the song and the musicians image. Uptown Funk and If I Were a Boy use very different post-production techniques. If I Were a Boy has been de-saturated in the editing process to create a more monochrome effect. This effect helps to reinforce a serious narrative that is being explored. In contrast, Uptown Funk has a highly saturated look, where colours have been emphasised in post-production, to create a more vibrant look that fits with the upbeat, fun song.
