Music Video

The study of music videos cover the influence of social/cultural contexts and two areas of the theatrical framework - media language and representation - plus the following two specific topics from media audiences.
  • the way in which audiences may interpret the same media products very differently and how these differences may reflect both social and individual differences.
  • the way in which people's media practises are connected to their identity, including their senses of actual and desired self.

Media Language in set videos
  • Camerawork - e.g. distinctive shots/camera movement, handheld v controlled, monochrome v colour.
  • Editing - e.g. editing pace, effects, distinctive, juxtapositions 
  • Mise-en-scĂ©ne - e.g. use of setting/location, lighting, costume, performance 
  • Soundtrack - use of diegetic sound or silence
  • Narrative - e.g. montage or linear narrative, Proppian heroes or villains 
  • how the media language portrays aspects of reality, presents a point of view, and represents the world to create a message and values - e.g. what is celebrated or criticised by the media language
