Mock DIRT

Q1: Ofcom - Regulator
Q2:  Avril Lavigne - Sk8ter Boy & Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag

Media language :
  • Narrative (story)
  • Mise-en-scene (costumes and setting)
  • Camera work
  • Editing
  • Soundtrack
Differences - explain and give an example

Music videos can use media language to differ from each other, such as mise-en-scene where one music video could include outfits that fit a school setting and the other would include outfits that fit a more tropical setting.
In my examples Teenage Dirtbag and Sk8ter Boy both use media language such as camera work to differ from each other. In Teenage Dirtbag the camera work is more professional and camera work that looks similar to the way movies are shot whereas in Sk8ter Boy the camera work usually is hand held or quick paced and not very professional as this suits what the videos want to show and work well with the story they're telling.

Q3:
  • How target - methods
  • Why - Advertisers or public service
  • E.g. Live Lounge
Radio producers target different audiences through the content of their radio programming, local radio stations are only available on FM in the local areas although some can be accessed through an online presence. Local radio targets a specific audience though their coverage of local events, weather, advertising, local musicians.

Radio producers target specific audiences through their use of style and genre of a radio programme. This can be seen in Radio 1's Live Lounge which uses an acoustic style to attract their audience along with a younger presenter to attract a younger audience. This can be seen in Harry Style's performance where he appeared and performed a current hit to attract a younger audience then he performed a older hit by Fleetwood Mac to attract a wider audience especially when performed in an acoustic style.

Q4:
  • Talk about an aspect that creates representation - image, colour, setting?
  • What representation is created?
  • What does this suggest to the audience?
On the cover of MOJO magazine we can see that the image is

Q5:

Similar elements of media language
Different elements of media language
Use examples for each

State whether they are similar or different because of genre conventions or music type. Do they reflect magazine conventions or music conventions? Use examples for each

Mock DIRT - Lego Movie

Q6: BBFC - age rates films in the UK.
'Games Rating Authority' or 'The video Standards Council' - ages rates video games in the UK.
Q7:
- Likely to be about media industries and theatrical framework. -
2 reasons why they would release both film and video game. Give the reasons then explain them.
  • Strengthen the brand
  • Increase the fans enjoyment
  • Increase the profit overall for the conglomerate
  • Diversify the product so increase the possibility of success
Q8:
2 examples given for the following (if you've got time add a third):
 - Know the theory well (knowledge)
 - Apply the theory to the film (understanding)
 - Give specific examples from the film

Uses and Gratification:
  • Entertainment - Pleasure and to escape the real world.
  • Personal Identity - Identify with characters in the film, role models.
  • Surveillance - Gain understanding of the world. E.g news and information
  • Social interactions / Personal relations - Keep in touch via video game communities or discuss the film with peers.
Blumer and Katz stated that media products were there for audience's entertainment, they were for pleasure and to escape the real world. This can be applied to the Lego Movie as this film creates a world that allows many to escape the real world and is quite humorous. We can see this specifically in the character of Lord Business as he is supposed to be the older parental figure in the film which creates humour as he is supposed to relate to parents but also make a joke out of stricter parents.

Blumer and Katz stated that media products were there for audience's entertainment, they were for people to identify with certain characters within a film. This can applied to The Lego Movie as the film creates a range of characters that many can identify with. This can be seen in the character of Emmet who is a young male who is very clumsy and makes many mistakes, many children and young adults may identify with him especially those who are more on the funny side or who make many mistakes.

Q9: How did the promotional campaign target a family audience?
  • Poster
  • Television Advert
  • Merchandise
  • Social Media
  • Video Game
1. Accurate analysis of how the campaign appealed to a family audience.
2. Mention to media contexts - genre hybridity - Lego and DC, post feminism in promotion, globalisation of product.
3. Full focus on the campaign element being analysed to the target audience representations.

 Poster:
1. Colour palette, lego figures familiar to all, Characters in the posters appeal to both boys and girls.
2. Global context of the actors - famous globally, attracts a wider audience.
3. Detailed analysis of representations created in the poster and how that attracts to a family audience.
